Stellenbosch Vineyards upholds highest food safety standards
Advini South Africa’s logistics and smart solutions hub, Stellenbosch Vineyards, recently attained the FSSC 22000 certification – the world’s most comprehensive food safety management system.
Stellenbosch Vineyards operations manager, Delana Green, human resources manager, Liande Coetzee, general manager, JG de Villiers and compliance manager, Mathilda Malan.
FSSC 22000 provides a strategic framework to manage food safety risks and meet the quality requirements for the entire wine supply chain. It is GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) recognized and therefore it has worldwide credibility. This crucial certification will play a significant role in providing assurance and confidence to retailers and partners, through quality management and traceability systems.
The food safety management system at Stellenbosch Vineyards is risk based and focused on continual improvement. According to Stellenbosch Vineyards compliance manager, Mathilda Malan, benefits for Stellenbosch Vineyards include gaining confidence of retailers and stakeholders, continual improvement of process performance, avoiding and managing food hazards and risks, increased operational efficiency in the organization and traceability throughout the value chain.
The system is rolled out over all departments at Stellenbosch Vineyards and identifies opportunities to improve processes. This includes supplier management, traceability, internal and external auditing, fraud assessment and environmental management.
“Environmental management has become a big priority at Stellenbosch Vineyards. We are reducing the environmental impact of the company by recycling where possible and monitoring trends,” explains Malan. The 2021 vintage was the first harvest that Stellenbosch Vineyards’ winemaking team used flotation technology, which resulted in reduced waste. The team also initiated a project that changed all lighting systems to LED, which has led to a reduction of electricity use in the company.
“Continuous improvement is part of Stellenbosch Vineyards’ ethos. The FSSC 22000 certification was subsequently aligned with our values and goal of continuing to raise the bar. We are confident that this certification will also add value to our partners across the globe,” explains Stellenbosch Vineyards’ general manager, JG de Villiers.
The Stellenbosch Vineyards team continuously strives to uphold the highest global compliance standards.
