Our Company

Our dream is to be the most admired South African wine business. This dream unites us as a team to make wines of excellent quality in an ethical, entrepreneurial way and to forge long-term sustainable and profitable business partnerships.

To be an entrepreneurial consumer driven organisation that unlocks potential, generates wealth and adds value to stakeholders through innovative thinking, creative solution finding, decisive decision making and energetic execution.

Stellenbosch Vineyards, as a company, is divided into three core divisions:

The Stellenbosch Vineyards Collection of Fine Wines consists of our super and ultra-premium family of wines, offering wine enthusiasts an exquisite selection of wines that truly reflect the excellence of its terroir.

Our Western Cape Wines consists of our commercial volume drivers that are readily available to the consumer. Offering great quality and value, these products place the consumer preferences first.

The Innovative Products division is sorely focused on driving innovation in the company through the development and introduction of groundbreaking products in the industry.

Our company premises boast a selection of facilities that provides us with the competitor advantage of servicing customers. This includes a laboratory, bottling facilities, as well as warehousing and exporting facilities.

Our warehousing and operations are well-equipped to export our products into other countries in worldwide through our export department and an established distributor network.

We hold memberships to the SA Liquor Bottlers Association (SALBA), Agricultural Ethical Trade Initiative (WIETA) and Wines of SA (WOSA). We are also members of the Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use (ARA) and we subscribe to their Code of Commercial Communication.

As one of the leading wine producers and exporters in South Africa, we as a business pay great attention to the economic, human and environmental strengths of our country. It is with this attention that we strongly support our local grape farmers that focus on social issues.

We subscribe to ethical and sustainable winemaking and are certified by WIETA, a body that regulates ethical standards in the industry.
Stellenbosch Vineyards encourages the upliftment of neighbouring farms and has played a major role in the establishment of Thandi Wines – the first Fairtrade wine brand worldwide. Today, Thandi is South Africa’s biggest black-owned exporting wine company with approximately 250 farm worker families as shareholders.

Our newest venture is the launch of Enaleni Vineyards, a wine farm that produce Fairtrade-accredited wines of the highest quality. This means adopting the business function of Enaleni Vineyards with regards to marketing, skills development, distribution, finance and winemaking.

Meet Our Winemakers

Abraham De Villiers

Abraham's main task is to procure and blend the best possible wines for Stellenbosch Vineyards ranges, including big commercial sellers Arniston Bay and Versus. He's also involved in the barrel selection for the Credo and Stellenbosch Vineyards ranges.

He completed his Hons BSc in Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch and joined the company in 2004. Recently, Abraham also completed his SMDP at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB).

Abraham is also no stranger to accolades with a Best in Class at the International Wine and Spirits Awards for some of the earlier vintages of the Arniston Bay Chenin Blanc Chardonnay, proving that with careful winemaking, one can achieve excellence in a commercial brand.

"Every wine starts in the vineyards already with the selection of specific blocks. Each wine is tasted and blended so many times to get the right style that I lose count. Wine is as much a science as it is passion and trusting your instinct and your tasting capabilities."

Bernard Claassen

Bernard is responsible for primary production in the Welmoed cellar and oversees the whole winemaking process, from grape intake to bottle-ready wine. He completed his first harvest on Welmoed in 2000 while still a winemaking student at the University of Stellenbosch and joined the company in 2004. Recently, Bernard completed his SMDP at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB).

Some of his winemaking successes include the double gold Veritas stunner, the Credo Chenin Blanc 2010 and the limited release The Flagship Petit Verdot 2010.

His winemaking goal?

"Obviously one wants recognition for the quality of one's work and the way for this is probably to win a few accolades along the way. But honestly I just like to make great wines that always over-deliver and that can be enjoyed by everyone."
